Whether you participate in a new committee or a well-established one, we hope to build on our collective strength. Several standing committees<\/a> are required by the UAW Constitution<\/a>, in Article 44:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Local Union shall have the following standing committees: Constitution and Bylaws, Organizing, Union Label, Education, Conservation and Recreation, Community Services, Civil and Human Rights, Citizenship and Legislative, Consumer Affairs, Veterans, a Local Union Women\u2019s Committee where such membership exists, and such other committees as they deem necessary. All committees should be appointed or elected, subject to the discretion of the Local Union or Unit Workplace Organization in the case of an Amalgamated Local Union.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Local 1979’s Bylaws<\/a> also define required committees in Article IX, sections 1 and 4:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

P&A\/UAW shall have the following Standing Committees: Constitution and Bylaws, Education, Conservation and recreation, Union Label, Civil Rights, Community Services Citizenship and Legislative, Women\u2019s, Consumer Affairs, Grievances, Veterans, Research.

\nBargaining Committee: The President and Vice-President will\nautomatically sit on the Bargaining Committee<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Constitution and Bylaws Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Constitution and Bylaws committee<\/a> sets the stage for how the local will function. Members of this committee<\/span> are responsible for submitting original and or amended bylaws provision to the local union membership for discussion and approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organizing Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Union Label Committee<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Union Label Committee<\/a> supports the labor movement by informing and educating members about the products we buy as consumers. This committee helps to emphasize the importance of supporting those goods and services produced by union members under union-won working conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Election Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Election Committee is called upon to handle all Local Nominations and elected positions. Some duties include setting up all Local 1979 Elections, conducting elections and making sure that the votes are tabulated and verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The specific duties of the Education Committee <\/a>shall be to promote all branches of education affecting the welfare of the individual members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conservation and Recreation Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Conservation and Recreation Committee<\/a> provides a variety of opportunities that fall into two categories. Recreation, which includes leisure time activities, and Conservation, which includes environmental concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community Services Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Community Services Committee<\/a> performs the important task of getting help for members and their families in time of need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civil and Human Rights Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Civil and Human Rights Committee<\/a> is an essential guardian of the \u201cNo Discrimination\u201d policy of our Union. Members of this committee fulfill the local union\u2019s commitment to assure members full rights regardless of religion, race, creed, color, sex, political affiliation, national origin, age, disability, marital status or sexual orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citizenship and Legislative Committee (CAP)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Citizenship and Legislative Committee<\/a> is the worksite political-legislative arm of the local union and the vital workplace political activator. Agenda; protecting worker rights, fair trade, new initiatives for working families, health and safety, and other issues that affect working families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumer Affairs Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Consumer Affairs Committee<\/a> members believe that the labor movement should monitor the social conscience and performance of companies in order to provide safe and honest products and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Veterans Committee <\/a>seeks members who are willing to represent the interest of all active and retired UAW veterans and their families. This committee is dedicated to advocating for the political and social needs of Veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women’s Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Women’s Committee<\/a> works to further the gains of women in the workplace as well as society. This committee informs and educates to broaden the scope of traditional women\u2019s roles. The sisters and brothers on the Women\u2019s Committee encourage women to become active in local, national, and community causes and programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budget Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Members of the Budget Committee are responsible for formulating the budget with regard to all local union expenditures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retirees Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Retirees Committee encourages the active involvement of our retired membership. Their wisdom is a valuable asset that we need to access regularly. This committee also helps to keep our seniors active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chaplaincy Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Chaplaincy Committee’s mission is to represent UAW Region 1 members in a manner which reflects our commitment of “Caring in the Workplace” and community. In doing so, we are guided by a spiritual belief that everyone’s purpose is to serve others in a capacity which upholds the principles of Integrity, Honesty, Accountability and Responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The specific duties of the Research Committee shall be gather and keep on file information on wages, hours and other conditions of employment and any general information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monitoring Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Monitoring Committee monitors the hiring practices within the workplace to ensure that the rules outlined within the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the state laws are being properly applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per Article IX, Section 4 of the Local 1979 Bylaws, “The President and Vice-President will automatically sit on the Bargaining Committee<\/em>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
